Ladoga-See
Privjet!

"It depends on your final target site by Ladoga lake. If You like to visit Olonets fields, it is better to drive to Niirala checkpoint south of Joensuu town. On the Russian side is Wärtsilä (Russians use to write is like Vyartsila). If you are going to the E-side of Ladoga like Lodeynoe Pole, you can choose either Niirala or Nuijamaa via Lappeenranta town and continue via Vyborg to St. Petersburg (pass the town on Eastern side). Ladoga Lake is ice covered until late April. This winter is severe one and I suppose that spring comes late.
There are usually no problems on Finnish side and minor byrocracy on Russian side. When coming to Russian checkpoint at Niirala/Wärtsilä are following steps:
1) a soldier (usually a woman) stops you and counts the number of passangers in your car and like to check passports first time. She/he gives you a small piece of paper with cryptic information. DO NOT LOSE it. You have to get it stamped at customs and give it back for another soldier at the last step.
2) drive further 200 - 300 m to the essential checkpoint building. Open doors and waite for a officers. After her/his permission Driver goes first to kiosk desk (on left or right which is occupied, officer gives information) and gives his passport and after him other passengers. Notice to ask for passenger card (includes two equal parts). The card is needed if you stay more than 3 weekdays in Russia). Fill in both parts and save the stamped card thru your whole trip. At your hotel you will be got registration stamp back this small card.
3a) passengers go into the building for customs. Usually they need not to fill customs declaration, sometimes the officer demands to do it as one-two copies. Sometimes the officer only ask how much you have money (if less than 1000 euros, you need not to fill customs declaration, but it depends on her/his opinion). Officers are very familiar with (Finnish) ornithologists with telescopes and cameras. Sometimes you can leave your belongings in car, sometimes officer like to see items ja you have take these with you into the customs building. If I am a passenger I take my small items like camera, binoculars and video with me and leave suitcases in the car.
3b) the driver takes documents of the car and walks 20 m further to another (inside) kiosk for registration of the car (if there is empty lane in front of your car, you can drive this short trip, but follow instructions of officers). At first you need to buy a Russian traffic insurance. There is a desk with a woman (not with uniform) who fills a blank, puts a stamp and ask for money (only roubles are valid- YOU CAN BUY a ROUBLES at NESTE Petrol station in Tohmajärvi before entering the frontier). After paying the insurence you have to fill Customs Declaration blank (put NO to all on questions (3.2. -3.12.) except YES to point 3.9. "High-frequency radio-electronic devices and means of communication" = MOBILE PHONE and 3.12. "Transportation unit" = CAR. On the opposite side of the blank You put to the point 4.1. all your optics, electronics, mobile phones. To the point 4.2. give information of your car. Then sign the blank. When finishing the Customs Declaration blank enter to the second desk inside the same kiosk and give your car documents, Russian traffic insurance document for the officer with uniform. He (usually a man) prepares a new document and you have to sign it as well. No money is needed. (There are usually a lot of truck drivers standing in a queue.).
4) in the customs house is Exchange point for passengers where is usually best value of money between euro and roubles.
5) when leaving the kiosk with car documents go to your car and wait for essential customs officer. He like to check the car thru open doors. Passengers can not stay inside the car but wait at door ot customs building. When having stamp of the officer on the Customs Declaration blank, you are free to leave.
6) drive 100 meters and stop beside a soldier and give the small piece of paper with cryptic information and STAMP on given at customs.
7) now you are free to leave the check point zone (after an hour starting from first soldier to last soldier)
8) first 50 km of the road from the front towards Sortavala is made by the Finns (good quality), after that the surface of the road is BAD od VERY BAD with big holes. Distance from the frontier to Olonets is more than 200 km and takes 4 hours!!!"
